But I think they also sensed that a part of me remained removed and detached – that I was an observer in their midst. And that it’s not enough to just believe this – we have to do our part to make it a reality. But at the end of the day, we cannot walk away – not for the sake of passing a bill, but so that we can finally address the real concerns of Americans and the persistent hopes of all those brothers and sisters who want nothing more than their own chance at our common dream. The church contains in full the kindness and cruelty, the fierce intelligence and the shocking ignorance, the struggles and successes, the love and yes, the bitterness and bias that make up the black experience in America. We meet at a time of tension between the United States and Muslims around the world – tension rooted in historical forces that go beyond any current policy debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They imagined me going to the best schools in the land, even though they weren’t rich, because in a generous America you don’t have to be rich to achieve your potential. Let me express my thanks to the historic slate of candidates who accompanied me on this journey, and especially the one who traveled the farthest – a champion for working Americans and an inspiration to my daughters and to yours – Hillary Rodham Clinton. And now is the time to keep the promise of equal pay for an equal day’s work, because I want my daughters to have exactly the same opportunities as your sons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The day after Pearl Harbor my grandfather signed up for duty; joined Patton’s army, marched across Europe. Those stories – of survival, and freedom, and hope – became our story, my story; the blood that had spilled was our blood, the tears our tears; until this black church, on this bright day, seemed once more a vessel carrying the story of a people into future generations and into a larger world. Tonight, I say to the American people, to Democrats and Republicans and Independents across this great land – enough! This moment – this election – is our chance to keep, in the 21st century, the American promise alive. But privately, many Muslims recognize that Israel will not go away. The Holy Koran tells us, „O mankind! We have created you male and a female; and we have made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That we can have an idea and start our own business without paying a bribe. She had this enormous capacity for wonder, and lived by the Golden Rule. Of course, the answer to the slavery question was already embedded within our Constitution – a Constitution that had at is very core the ideal of equal citizenship under the law; a Constitution that promised its people liberty, and justice, and a union that could be and should be perfected over time. To the love of my life, our next First Lady, Michelle Obama, and to Sasha and Malia – I love you so much, and I’m so proud of all of you. Much has been made of the fact that an African-American with the name Barack Hussein Obama could be elected President. And finally, just as America can never tolerate violence by extremists, we must never alter our principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I’ve been speaking to a lot of churches recently, so it’s nice to be speaking to one that’s so familiar. And so they need an assurance that somebody out there cares about them, is listening to them – that they are not just destined to travel down that long road toward nothingness. I love this country, and so do you, and so does John McCain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
